5 Steps to Creating a Successful Clothing Brand

If you are thinking of starting your own clothing label, you may already be aware that there are so many things you’ve got to think of, and it requires lots of hard work, especially at the beginning. Luckily, however, there are ways you can set yourself up for success while keeping your business effective and manageable. Here are 5 steps to creating a successful clothing brand.

 1. Research everything

Although it’s pretty obvious, this first point is something which a lot of people overlook in various aspects, but it’s probably the single most important thing when laying a foundation for your brand. You need to be prepared to research absolutely everything that may be applicable, and do so in great depth and detail, to ensure that you have covered absolutely everything you need. Of course, there may be things that come up in the future, that you’d never thought about before, but you need to create a habit of researching those new things then, to stay on top of the game.

It's also important to remember that your research should extend outside of the basic ‘how to set up a business’ or ‘how to choose a name for your brand’, if you want to create a successful clothing label. Your research should take lots of time, which you need to be prepared for, and consist of different types of research, too. As well as using google, or reading information from books, conduct your own experiments, discover things yourself, and observe the world around you. Collect as much information as you can when you research any project.

 2. Find your speciality

If you look at ay big name in the fashion industry, they chose one thing to focus on, with very specific brand designs and worked from there. Although some bigger brands, such as designer clothing brands, have dipped into additional industries as well as their core focus (designers such as Chanel have now released their own makeup line, for example), they only expanded their audience once they saw success in their niche.

Finding something specific to focus on in your brand can help you to set it apart from others, and it also results in the products which you create being of higher quality, and therefore being worth more, or enticing more customers to buy them, than if you sold a large range of products which don’t really fit in so well. This extends, also, to things such as your company’s beliefs or ethics, as these are also very important, and have a heavy influence on consumers, and where they buy their clothes from, nowadays.

 3. Be aware of finances

Many people have their own ideas of success, but it’s no secret that a successful clothing brand should generally be earning a decent amount of money. Of course, this isn’t the case for everyone, and some brands or companies exist purely to spread a certain message, or to encourage certain ethical beliefs, but this isn’t possible without a steady cash flow.

Being aware of all your finances, how much you have available to spend on or invest in the brand, potential costs in the future, and everything else in between can prevent any unexpected or unnecessary financial dilemmas, and reduce stress, too. Unexpected expenses come up and it's encouraged that you plan for these emergencies. It is vital that you have accounted for all your brand spending when evaluating your finances. Keeping track of this can also be quite motivational, as it can highlight how much you’ve earned this month compared to last month, and you can pick out what went well, or what needs some improvement, to make your brand as effective and successful as possible.

 4. Make yourself stand out

If you look at some of the most successful clothing brands, or even just any successful brands in general, you’ll most likely be able to pick out some things that set them apart from others. There are so many elements of the creation of your brand which can have this effect, and it’s all about finding out what they are, and how you can make them obvious.

A great example, which many people will most likely know, is the iconic red sole of a Christian Louboutin shoe. It’s something so bold and easy to distinguish compared to other brands, but also suits the brand’s style, giving their shoes a classy finish. Now, you don’t have to go for something quite as extravagant as this but discovering ways in which you can set yourself apart from another brand is really valuable. Even something like the way you create campaigns or a really commendable ethical value, can make you stand out.

 5. Set goals for your brand

Finally, you need to set goals for your brand. What does success mean to you – is it financial success, are you hoping to spread a message, or are you hoping to become a popular and famous label? These large goals can be great things to aspire to and breaking them down into smaller pieces can help you to create realistic, achievable goals which will keep you motivated. For example, setting a goal for how many t-shirts you wish to sell this year can be a good way to break down financial success or popularity, and increasing this goal each time you meet it can be really powerful and motivating.

If, however, you don’t achieve your goals exactly, or business is slow to start with, don’t panic, as this is completely normal, and brands go through slower periods all the time! Just make sure that you have fun while doing everything and stick to your dreams and goals, even when they can seem difficult to reach.
